EPA Recognizes Rover’s Edge Developer as Green Power Purchaser
MEDFORD, MA -- Preotle, Lane & Associates, developer of River' s Edge, has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as one the nation's Green Power purchasers.
Preotle, Lane & Associates has committed to purchase 4.0 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of Renewable Energy Credits generated by wind farms across America. Renewable Energy Credits help to address the environmental footprint of electrical consumption. This purchase offsets 100 percent of the base building electricity for 200 River's Edge Drive over the next three years. The EPA estimates that the purchase, which is equivalent to the amount of electricity needed to power more than 100 average American homes per year, saves the same amount of CO2 emissions produced by nearly 200 passenger vehicles annually.
Green power is electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low-impact hydro. These resources generate electricity with a net zero increase in carbon dioxide emissions, while offering a superior environmental profile compared to traditional power generation sources. Green power purchases also support the development of new renewable energy generation sources nationwide.
"EPA is pleased to welcome River's Edge to the Green Power Partnership. We applaud Preotle, Lane & Associates' commitment to using green power to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," said Susan Wickwire, Chief of the Energy Supply and Industry Branch at EPA.
"This is a tremendous honor and we are proud to be recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency," said Matt Preotle of Preotle Lane & Associates. "We are pleased that this purchase of green power will enable us to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of 200 River's Edge."
Preotle, Lane & Associates has also purchased Verified Emission Reductions (VERs) equal to 297 metric tons of CO2 equivalent to offset 100 percent of the anticipated carbon emissions of 200 River's Edge over the next three years. VERs are sold to help finance projects that reduce the emission of carbon and other greenhouse gases, and this purchase helps prevents up to 300,000 pounds of CO2 from entering the atmosphere annually.
The purchase, through Boulder, Colorado based Renewable Choice Energy, demonstrates River's Edge's continued commitment to sustainability, joining such corporations and universities as Bloomberg LP, Cisco Systems, Pepsi, Whole Foods Markets, Carnegie Mellon University and University of Pennsylvania, which have supported renewable energy, reduced CO2 emissions and helped preserve natural resources.
200 River's Edge, the first office building at River's Edge, has also recently been awarded LEED® Gold Certification established by the U.S. Green building Council.
River's Edge's $200 million Phase I project, which is located in Medford, features 200 River's Edge Drive — approximately 115,000 square feet. Phase 1 will also include two additional contemporary office buildings for an aggregate of 410,000 square feet; The Residences at Rivers Edge, a recently completed residential building with 221 luxury rental housing units developed and owned by Criterion Development Partners; the Tufts University Boat House; and an award-winning 10-acre riverfront park.
